Although horse breeding is the main activity of the Alter Stud Farm - and this is one of the best export products of our country, with quality recognized throughout the world - there are other important activities related to the equestrian universe that are developed here through various valences linked to the Lusitano thoroughbred horse, ranging from its birth to competition.

Science and Training

The Equine Reproduction Center, attached to the Clinical Unit of the Alter Stud Farm, ensures both the reproductive control of the equine herd of the Alter Stud Farm, and meets requests from clients outside the stud farm. This unit also provides support, assisting the hospitalization and the surgery and internal medicine service and collaborating in the service schedules during the weekend.

The Clinical Unit of the Alter Stud Farm operates as part of the University of Évora and is equipped with excellent equipment for equine treatment and research. The protocol signed between the Alter Stud Farm and the University of Évora determines that the practical equine classes of the integrated master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine of this university are carried out in the real context of the stud farm.

Within the perimeter of the Alter Stud Farm, the Alter do Chão Professional School for Rural Development (EPDRAC) also operates. In harmony with the needs of rural development in the interior of the country, the professional courses of Equine Management Technician, Agricultural Production Technician, Equestrian Tourism Escort Technician and Environmental and Rural Tourism Technician are taught in this teaching center. The School also provides Education and Training Courses, such as Equine Handler and Roughage, Horticulture / Fruit Growing and Agricultural Operator.
