The Interpretation Center, located in Casas Altas, is the best starting point for a visit to the Alter Stud Farm. There you will discover centuries of important events and achievements, and the magnificent history of the Alter Real Lusitano horse and how the Alter Stud Farm managed to overcome so many historical, social and economic adversities, becoming an unparalleled example of longevity.
The Stud Farm has a visitation program that addresses the historical component, from its creation to the present day, with a strong interaction with the daily life of a stud farm. Visitors are offered guided tours that tell the history of the Stud Farm, while revealing the daily activities of horses, riders, veterinarians and attendants, and going through different spaces loaded with history (such as the Patio das Éguas, the Patio D. João VI, the Stables of the Stallions and the Casa dos Trens).
From Tuesday to Friday it is possible to watch the departure of the eguada, made up of about 60 mares with bellies, the favorite photographic target of visitors who seek to capture the moment when the mares leave, between 3:30 pm and 4 pm, to the pasture where they will spend the night, often accompanied by their foals. Conversely, on the same days, you can watch the arrival of the ewe, coming from the field, to the Alter Stud Farm, between 10am and 11am.
The Alter Stud Farm is equipped with all the conditions for equestrian activities, available for all ages and that can be adapted to different levels of learning. It is possible to do horseback riding and carriage driving baptisms, as well as vaulting classes. There is also the possibility of taking riding lessons adjusted to the different levels of riders, taught by excellent and highly experienced trainers. In addition to these options, which are available to all audiences, there are horseback riding and carriage driving programs that can be carried out in the spaces of the Stud Farm, benefiting from the bucolic landscapes of Alter do Chão.
Visits are always accompanied by a guide and take place from Tuesday to Sunday.
